Chapters stores to be renamed as Indigo

The flagship Chapters bookstore on Robson and Howe streets is closing on June 7, but it will not signal the bookstore chain’s exit from the Vancouver market.

Vancouver’s remaining store at the corner of West Broadway and Granville streets has been undergoing an extensive renovation as part of a phased plan to revitalize the chain of bookstores across the country.

The 29,000-square-foot store in South Vancouver will also be renamed after parent company Indigo when the store reopens with the new concept on June 12.  The renovations will allow for the addition of thousands of additional book titles to store shelves and a greater space for merchandise such as home décor, fashion and paper.

As well, the American Girl specialty boutique currently located at the Robson flagship store will be relocated to a new 1,800-square-foot space within the South Vancouver location.

Indigo maintains that it is pursuing a new replacement location for the downtown Vancouver market. There have been reports that the company is considering occupying a 16,000-square-foot retail space on a temporary basis within the new office tower at 745 Thurlow Street.

It was announced in January 2015 that the Robson store would shutter its doors this summer, with company executives blaming a significant rise in rents. But the large three-storey space will not remain vacant for long: Sport Chek will move into the space later this year, after it vacates its current Pacific Centre location to make way for a Holt Renfrew expansion.

Liquidation sales are currently occurring at the Chapters Robson and Sports Chek Pacific Centre stores with discounts of 50 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively.
