New aquatic centre and ice rink proposed for Burnaby Lake Sports Complex

There are plans to demolish and replace the CG Brown Pool and Burnaby Lake Arena on their existing site at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Following public consultation earlier this year that gauged the project’s directions, staff with the City of Burnaby are now creating a proposal that replaces both facilities with a new integrated sports and recreational complex at 3676 Kensington Avenue.

A new NHL-sized ice rink will be supported by five change rooms and spectator seating for 200 people.

As well, a new aquatic facility is envisioned to include a 50-metre pool with 10 lanes, a secondary 25-metre pool with six lanes, a leisure pool, hot tubs, sauna, steam rooms, and a 750-seat-capacity spectator grandstand.

The complex will also have a common large lobby space, multi-purpose rooms, support offices, concession services, sports hall of fame display area, fitness gym, and daycare.

Bill Copeland Sports Centre, constructed in 1998, will remain on the site and be integrated into the new complex.

The municipal government says the existing 1960s-built ice rink and 25-metre lap pool are in need of replacement and no longer meet the needs of the growing community and sports hub.

No estimated project cost is available at this time, as city staff are still developing a preliminary development design, which is expected to be ready for the public and city council’s review in early 2020.

If the project receives city council’s design and funding approval, construction could begin in 2021 for a completion in 2024.

Burnaby Lake Sports Complex is home to a cluster of outdoor and indoor recreational facilities for both leisure and athletic training purposes.

This includes the 250,000-sq-ft Burnaby 8 Rinks, which is being renamed Scotia Barn in a new naming rights deal with Scotiabank. Tennis Canada is also developing a new $30-million state-of-the-art national tennis training facility with 24 courts, including 12 indoor courts and 12 outdoor courts.
