A list detailing Canada’s 100 highest-paid CEOs is out, and the CEO of Vancouver-based telecom giant Telus made some serious bucks.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released a new report analyzing compensation for Canada’s 100 highest-paid CEOs in 2023.
The top CEOs earned an average of $13.2 million in 2023 — the third-highest average since the CCPA started tracking CEO pay in 2008. At the top of the list is Patrick Dovigi, CEO of waste management company GFL Environmental Inc., who earned $68,464,987.
Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of Telus Corp. came in ninth place with a whopping $19.1 million in salary, awards, and non-equity incentive plan compensation.

Entwistle joined Telus in dual executive roles in 2000 and is the longest-serving CEO in the global telecommunications industry, according to his biography on the Telus website.
He is also the highest-paid telecom CEO in the country, ranking above Mirko Bibic of BCE Inc. who made $11.1 million and Tony Staffieri Rogers Communications Inc. who made $10.5 million.
Jeff Puritt, President and CEO of Telus International, also cracked the list with $11.6 million. His 2023 salary was calculated based on his being paid on USD, which was converted to Canadian dollars
While the average provincial minimum hourly wage for an average worker is around $15.20, the hourly wage for CEOs was $3,255 an hour in 2023.
The 100 highest-paid CEOs aren’t getting richer because of their salaries, which average around $1.3 million, but because of their “juicy bonuses” — which average out to around $10.7 million per CEO.
