Celebration of Lights a Celebration of Pollution?

Dec 19 2017, 11:51 am

These past few days I’ve heard many West Enders bitch and complain about the garbage that is left at English Bay after every fireworks extravaganza. My neighbour is the worst of the worst, a recent transplant from Surrey who all of sudden thinks he owns the West End. Outrageous.
Now I hate garbage as much as the next guy. Hell, I am on that beach every morning going for a run, so the sight of garbage isn’t pleasant, but I tolerate it, besides the clean up crew has the beach as clean as ever in a few hours. What I don’t get is why the NIMBY’s in the West End complain about the garbage pollution, while the real pollution is the fireworks display themselves. Does that thought not cross their narrow minds.

Either way, I am for the Celebration of Light pollution and all, because the vibe downtown this weekend was amazing. Bring on more I say as Vancouver is ever so close to shedding its no fun reputation. Now all we need is relaxed liquor laws and later bar hours and we are golden.

Slowly but surely, afterall we are a relatively young city trying to balance the needs of many and not a select few.
