CBC reveals details of women's hockey coverage on 'Hockey Night in Canada'

Hockey Night in Canada is officially returning to CBC this season, but it will look a bit different from what fans are used to.

After heavy speculation last week, CBC announced Monday that the iconic program will return in partnership with the Professional Women’s Hockey League, with eight primetime PWHL games set to be broadcast throughout the 2026-27 season.

The first Hockey Night in Canada PWHL broadcast will take place on Dec. 5, when the reigning Walter Cup champion Montreal Victoire takes on PWHL Hamilton at Bell Place.

It will mark the first time a women’s professional hockey game is featured on Hockey Night in Canada.

Each of the eight games will feature at least one Canada-based team, with CBC also providing pregame and postgame coverage and additional digital content.

“Our partnership with the PWHL opens a new chapter in sports history,” said Chris Wilson, executive director of sports and Olympics at CBC. “We are proud to announce the return of the iconic ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ brand, building on this beloved Canadian tradition with the PWHL’s growing fanbase and providing audiences across the country with free access to world-class hockey.”

The move comes after CBC and Rogers did not extend their sublicensing agreement for NHL games for the upcoming season. The NHL will instead be featured across Sportsnet platforms, while Hockey Night in Canada moves forward with the PWHL.

CBC first aired Hockey Night in Canada on television in 1952, making the program one of the longest-running sports broadcasts in the world.

The PWHL is entering its fourth season and will have 12 teams competing in 2026-27 following the addition of four expansion franchises.

The full PWHL national broadcast schedule is expected to be announced on Friday, Oct. 2.
