B.C.’s Carly Rae Jepsen just dropped the year’s best pop album

Last week, Lower Mainland export Carly Rae Jepsen dropped one hell of an album.

In every way, “E•MO•TION” is an incredible work of pop music, and the critical praise has been pouring in generously. The notoriously prickly folks at Pitchfork rated it at 7.4, while Vulture even declared it superior to “1989,” the masterpiece fifth studio album by the mighty Taylor Swift.

After the surprising and stratospheric success of 2012’s chart-topper “Call Me Maybe,” Mission, B.C.’s Jepsen took her time crafting over 200 songs and circling the globe to work with a hand-picked team of the industry’s best, including Sia, Dev Hynes, and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij. The 15 tracks that made E•MO•TION’s final cut are fresh and effervescent, awash with ’80s synth and reminiscent of classics from the likes of Prince and Cyndi Lauper. With an album this good, Jepsen has arrived in an even bigger way than she did in 2012, putting any remnant of “one-hit wonder” status firmly in the rear-view mirror.

E•MO•TION’s opening track, “Run Away With Me,” is an absolute showstopper. Not since Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” has a pop song induced the kind of enamoured euphoria that makes listeners want to run down the street, arms stretched wide. Check out the fabulous globetrotting video:
