For the first time in his NHL career, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price has been traded.
The 38-year-old was just dealt from the Canadiens to the San Jose Sharks, in exchange for a 2026 fifth-round pick and prospect Gannon Laroque.
Price, who hasn’t played a game since April 29, 2022, was forced to step away from hockey due to recurring knee problems, so he won’t play a game for the Sharks.
The trade is all about clearing cap space for the Canadiens, freeing them up from carrying Price’s $10.5 million cap hit for the final season of his contract. They have been over the salary cap for the last three seasons due to his cap hit, and they’ve gotten around it by burying his salary on long-term injured reserve (LTIR).
Montreal was one of three teams over the cap, but the trade now means they have $4.5 million in cap space. The Vegas Golden Knights and the Florida Panthers are the other two teams that are currently over the cap.
San Jose had the second-most salary cap space in the NHL prior to the trade. Only the Anaheim Ducks had more cap space.

Price has only played five games for the Canadiens since they were defeated in the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals by the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Anahim Lake, B.C., native enjoyed a distinguished, 15-year NHL career that was highlighted by a Hart Trophy win in 2015, making him just one of eight NHL goaltenders ever to be named MVP.
He leads all goaltenders in Canadiens history with 361 wins and 712 games played. He’s second in franchise history with 43 playoff wins and 92 playoff games played, trailing Ken Dryden.
