Card skimmers found at New Westminster pay stations

New Westminster residents should be on the lookout for credit card skimmers at pay parking stations according to police.

Skimmers are designed to sit on top of existing and legitimate card readers at places like bank tellers or gas pumps, and secretly collect the credit card information of whomever is unfortunate to swipe their card.

New Westminster police found two of these devices on nearby parking paystations, one of them along East Columbia street, after a New Westminster resident made city staff aware she’d had her credit card compromised shortly after using one of the stations.

City engineering staff will now do daily inspections on the pay stations, and police are encouraging anyone who may have used a public pay parking station recently to check their credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
