Two people are dead and six others were taken to hospital after a crash on the Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam on Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 3:30 pm, Coquitlam RCMP responded to reports of a multi-vehicle collision on the Lougheed Highway, between Como Lake Road and Pitt River Road.

From what they can tell so far, police said, a large, unoccupied dump truck rolled down an incline from a construction site and onto the highway, where it collided with two vehicles.

The collision sent six people to hospital with varying degrees of injuries. Two lives were lost in the incident as well: The dump truck’s operator and a woman in one of the vehicles that was hit.

Police are not providing any updates at this point as to the seriousness of the injuries suffered by those in hospital.

Moving forward, Coquitlam RCMP will work with WorkSafe BC to investigate the collision and further updates will be released when available.

“The Coquitlam RCMP would like thank the bystanders and witnesses on scene who helped our members,” said Coquitlam RCMP Const. Jennifer Goodings in a statement. “We would also like to thank commuters and local residents for their understanding during the lengthy road closure.”
