If a picture’s worth a thousand words, locals better get ready for a real eyeful. Vancouver’s first citywide photography festival promises to be a soul-stirring riot of imagery that celebrates photography and lens-based art.
To kick off the festival, Capture is launching the “Capture In Transit” photography competition. The winner will see their artwork produced and displayed large-scale at the King Edward station on the Canada Line and will receive a $500 artist fee. London Drugs is also contributing prizing – the winner and two runner ups will each receive $100 towards the London Drugs PhotoLab, processing and printing. The competition runs from July 4 to August 4, 2013. The winner will be announced in September 2013.
“Photography has long been a means of communication and documentation as well as an art form,” says Festival Director Julie Lee. “Through the festival, we hope to foster emerging talent, encourage active community participation, and initiate stimulating conversation about the role of photography in society”.
During the festival, a program called “Capture in Transit” will showcase photographic works at stations along the Canada Line from Waterfront to YVR-Airport Station. The Capture in Transit Photography Competition offers amateurs and professionals alike a chance to showcase their work in a high density urban venue. The winner, selected by a jury, will be installed on the Cambie Street windows of King Edward Station, and be on display for a period of up to six months. The winning photographic work will also be published in Capture’s 2013 festival magazine–both print and digital editions–and displayed on capturephotofest.com.
This competition will be a part of Capture’s programming of seven other Canada Line Stations curated by leading Vancouver cultural institutions such as Presentation House Gallery, Vancouver Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Gallery, Langara College and Emily Carr University.
The Capture in Transit Photography Competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers nineteen and over living in British Columbia.
The inaugural Capture Photography Festival runs from October 1 to November 15.

With primarily free events, the Capture Photography Festival aims to deliver an exciting array of exhibitions and a series of community-based photo workshops, tours, artist talks, films and panel discussions.
