Capilano University full-scale strike forces final exam rescheduling

Students will have more time to study for their final exams as a result of the latest development in the ongoing full-scale instructor strike at Capilano University.

Final exams at all Capilano University campuses at North Vancouver, Squamish and the Sunshine Coast have been rescheduled to begin on Thursday, April 16 and conclude on Friday, April 24.

Exams were originally scheduled from April 13 to 24.

The new exam schedule, with date and time listings for all exams, will be published on the institution’s website. Students will receive an email as soon as the revised exam schedule becomes available.

The post-secondary institution announced this morning that its deliberations with the union through Saturday and into the early morning hours of Sunday failed to reach an agreement.

“Regrettably, after many hours of discussion, the parties remain at an impasse,” reads a statement by the administration.

“We recognize the uncertainty and concern created by this situation, and are working hard to mitigate the impact on our students, their families and other members of our campus community. Our most immediate priority is to finalize plans to allow students to successfully complete their academic terms.”

The full-scale instructor strike began last Wednesday, effectively cancelling the semester’s final three days of classroom hours. Over 7,000 students are affected by the strike.

Since February, the Capilano University Faculty Association has been seeking more authority over the regulation of instructor employment. However, the administration has argued that this would interfere with the institution’s ability to manage its own finances.

Both sides have already agreed on the provincial government’s mandated wage increase of 5.5 per cent over a five year term.
