The Vancouver Canucks are still dealing with the ramifications of president Jim Rutherford’s bombshell interview, in which he stated that one of J.T. Miller or Elias Pettersson will likely need to be traded.
The feud between the two co-stars has been confirmed, and the entire hockey world knows about it.
It appears that Miller is the more likely candidate to be traded. Pettersson’s age and production make him a more valuable asset. The issue is that Miller has a full no-movement clause and can control where he goes.
While there was a previous understanding that Miller was only interested in going to teams located on the East Coast of the United States, that has now seemingly changed.
Miller would reportedly be open to a good situation or a contender, per Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts. This includes teams in the Western Conference, which are being talked about more and more.
“There’s been some rumours about Miller and Colorado…don’t think he would reject it for geographical reasons.”
The Colorado Avalanche have been put forward as a potential trade partner. They have an aggressive front office and are looking to contend now. They lack the centre depth to match true contenders, and that’s where Miller could come in handy.
The increased options will make facilitating a Miller trade easier for the Canucks. With more potential trade partners, they can ideally get a better return.
The team came close to completing a Miller trade already, as they nearly dealt him to the New York Rangers. That offer fell through, and the two-way centre remains on the roster, although they’re still clearly listening to offers.
Miller has 35 points in 40 games this season. It’s solid production through all of the noise surrounding the team, although far off his 103-point pace from last season. At best, he’s one of the league’s premier two-way centres.
All eyes around the league are on the Canucks. They have two premier players on the trade block, and a deal is expected to be made soon. With more options now available for Miller, a trade could happen any day.
