The Vancouver Canucks are closing in on a Pettersson trade, it’s just not the one everyone has been talking about.
And J.T. Miller can be at ease.
The Canucks are in trade talks with the New York Rangers regarding defenceman Marcus Pettersson, according to NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Elliotte Friedman. Vancouver is receiving a first-round draft pick in return, per Friedman. The pick is in 2030, and is top-10 protected.

The 30-year-old defenceman struggled last season, though he wasn’t alone on the last-place Canucks. Pettersson was acquired on Jan. 31, 2025, as part of a package that included the first-round draft pick the Canucks got in the J.T. Miller trade the same day.
Pettersson is entering the second year of a six-year contract that carries a $5.5 million cap hit. In order to be traded, the Swedish blueliner must waive his full no-movement clause. He has agreed to do so for the Rangers, according to Pagnotta.
