Vancouver Canucks trade Conor Garland to Columbus Blue Jackets

The Vancouver Canucks have made another trade, this time involving Conor Garland.

Garland is off to Columbus, as the Canucks get a pair of draft picks in return. The Canucks have received a second-round pick in 2028 and a third-rounder in this year’s draft.

“We really appreciate all that Conor has done for the hockey club and want to thank him for his five years in Vancouver,ā€ said Canucks GM Patrik Allvin. “A play driver and strong competitor, he was a key contributor on the ice. Collecting two more draft picks aligns really well with our vision moving forward and will help us in our rebuild.”

Garland, 29, is in the final year of a five-year contract paying him $4.95 million per season. The Scituate, Massachusetts, native signed a contract extension last summer, which doesn’t kick in until July 1. The new six-year deal will pay Garland $6 million per season, and notably includes a no-movement clause.

Like many of his Canucks teammates, Garland is having a down year offensively, with just 26 points (7-19-26) in 50 games. He had been remarkably consistent in his four previous years in Vancouver, scoring 17-20 goals and 46-52 points per season.

Trade talk heated up earlier in the day regarding Garland, with six teams reportedly interested. The New York Islanders, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and San Jose Sharks were the other teams reportedly interested in the diminutive winger.

Columbus is currently one point behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

This is the second significant trade completed by the rebuilding Canucks in as many days, as Tyler Myers was dealt to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday. They also traded Jett Woo to San Jose in an exchange of minor league players.

The trade deadline is set for Friday at noon Pacific Time, and the Canucks are expected to be busy. It’s expected that the team will try to offload pending unrestricted free agents Evander Kane, Teddy Blueger, and David KƤmpf, but other players could be on the move as well.
