When Mike Gillis first became GM of the Vancouver Canucks, he promised “bold” moves. Well, today he inked the number 1 defenceman available in free agency, Dan Hamhuis.
BC-boy Hamhuis is a versatile dman, able to play multiple situations, a top 2 dman. He is something the Canucks need, when injuries strike. However, I feel we’re still short of a Norris trophy to have the Cup in the bag. We’ll contend next season, and have a great shot, but no guarantees.
Malhotra has some grit and will likely be put on the fourth line to replace Ryan Johnson. Cody Hodgson should make third line this year. But, to pay a fourth liner $2.5 mil is questionable. This may be more of a marketing gimmick to tap into the lucrative Indo-Canadian community. They went nuts for Prab Rai, just watch what happens when Malhotra puts on the jersey.
The Canucks are definitely stronger than last year, with the addition of Hamhuis, Ballard, and Malhotra, but may be a little bit short of championship glory. Let’s see if Gillis has some more tricks up his sleeve.
