The Vancouver Canucks have sent three players to their AHL affiliate in Utica: Jacob Markstrom, Brendan Gaunce, and Alex Biega.
Markstrom suffered an injury late in preseason and has yet to play a regular season game this season. His trip to Utica is a conditioning assignment, so he should be back in the NHL in short order. This weekend the Canucks begin a stretch of three games in four nights in Buffalo, New Jersey, and Columbus, so we may see Markstrom back by then.
It should be a nice homecoming for Markstrom, the Comets’ playoff hero from last season who Uticans likely thought they would never see again.
With Chris Higgins healthy again, Gaunce is headed back to the Comets after appearing in two games with the Canucks on this call-up, scoring his first NHL goal in the process. He looked solid as a depth forward, so we likely haven’t seen the last of him this season.
Biega was called up as insurance with Dan Hamhuis injured and did not see any game action on this call-up.
