Canucks recall Weber and Friesen from Utica

Less than a week after being put on waivers and demoted to the AHL, defenceman Yannick Weber is on his way back to the NHL. He didn’t even get a chance to play in a game for the Comets.

After picking up 11 goals and 21 points last season, Weber has a disappointing 0 goals and 5 assists in 35 games this year.

Also on his way up is 25-year-old centre Alex Friesen. Friesen, who has never played an NHL game, has played in 4 AHL seasons with the Canucks organization. He has 8 goals and 18 points in 41 games with the Comets this season.

Both Weber and Friesen are being recalled because of injuries to Alex Edler (foot) and Brandon Sutter (jaw) suffered in Tuesday’s win against Colorado.

It remains to be seen if the pair will see any on-ice action with the big club, as they are expected to watch next game from the press box.

The Canucks play again on Saturday at home to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
