The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly jacked up the asking price in a potential Kiefer Sherwood trade.
With the Canucks sitting near the bottom of the NHL standings as the holidays approach, it’s becoming more and more likely that the team sells ahead of March 6’s trade deadline. One of the most sought-after trade targets that Vancouver has to offer is Sherwood, who has 12 goals and 16 points in 29 games this season.
Plenty of teams have already shown interest in trading for the Canucks forward, and a new report from The Athletic’s Michael Russo and Joe Smith has shed light on what Vancouver wants in return.
According to the new report, the Minnesota Wild have already offered the Canucks their original asking price of a “good, young prospect,” but that wasn’t enough. Now, it seems as though GM Patrik Allvin wants a little more for Sherwood.
“The Canucks have shopped him around the league and originally wanted a good, young prospect,” wrote Russo and Smith. “The Canucks have since changed gears. Reportedly, they now want a good roster player and have also asked teams for a first-round pick.”
Vancouver seems to think that the bidding war surrounding Sherwood will garner more than just futures at this point. The Canucks are in desperate need to get better, especially with rumours of a potential Quinn Hughes trade getting louder and louder.
The Ohio native is an interesting player, whose mixture of offence and ability to lay the body will be coveted across the league. Apart from his 12 goals this season, Sherwood is also second in the NHL with 124 hits so far.
Though Sherwood had a good start to the season, things seemed to have cooled off considerably in recent weeks. After notching nine goals through the first 12 games of the season, he has just three in his last 17 games.
The Canucks have been searching for a top-six centre this season, so that could be one potential target for the team heading into the deadline. That, however, may be a lofty expectation in a trade involving a player who is 30 and has hit the 40-point plateau just once in his career.
With the deadline still a few months away, there is no telling if the Canucks will get what they’re after in a Sherwood trade or if they will need to back down to their original asking price.
