Canucks prospect Thatcher Demko highlight reel glove save (Video)

The Canucks pool of prospects continues to show moments of brilliance this year, and last night it was Thatcher Demko’s turn to try and break into TSN’s list of top plays of the year.

We have seen Andrey Pedan ask Jared Tinordi if he bought tickets to the gun show this year.

We have seen Jake Virtanen deposit Jared Hauf directly into the Smackdown hotel.

Now we have Thatcher Demko making a highlight reel save that should place it firmly in YouTube’s top hockey videos of the month.

Now that’s the kind of save Jim Hughson would lose his mind over.

“GREAT SAAAAAAAAVE DEMKO! THAT’S GOD DAMN ROBBERY. THAT IS ROBBERY. CALL THE POLICE BECAUSE A CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED. SERIOUSLY, CALL THE COPS.”

Now, as with every time a video is posted about a great save, let’s get a few things out of the way.

Don’t be that guy who says “The guy shot it right at him!”

Or the guy who says “I’ve seen better.”

Or the girl who says “If he was in position, he wouldn’t have to make that save.”

Let’s just take a moment and enjoy a solid save from a Canucks prospect.

If you’re an Oilers or Flames fan, then by all means, break down how awful you think that save truly was.

Regardless, Thatcher “The Next Schneider” Demko has had himself one heck of a year. As Vancity Buzz prospect guru Ryan Biech points out:

Again, the usual caveat applies of “who knows what will happen in the NHL”, but it’s always much nicer when a prospect has stunning numbers vs “OK, so Demko lost 35 games in a row, but you know, there is still a chance he rounds into form in the NHL, right?”

This year has been kind of fun, because the Canucks farm system has never really been a strong point in recent years (ever?). As much fun as it was to cheer on Brandon Reid’s attempts to make the team, the Canucks haven’t really been able to draw strength from their drafting lately. Seeing various players in the Canucks system having strong years (and putting out a highlight or two here and there) is exciting to see.

While it is still too early to tell if things have totally turned around, drafting wise, it certainly looks like they might finally be headed in the right direction. The Canucks not being ranked in the bottom three for prospects is certainly a small victory, if nothing else.
