Jake Virtanen donned the retro black Canucks skate jersey today, wearing Igor Larionov’s old #18, and boy does it ever look good.
The Canucks will wear these jerseys on February 13th, at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Rogers Arena.
Ryan Miller was breaking in his retro pads and mask today at practice. The matching glove and blocker were missing, but he’ll have them eventually.
Appropriate that Ryan Miller wears Vaughn goalie pads, as it reminds me of another Canucks goalie…
There will be an extra buzz for the Canucks-Leafs game (as if it needed it), as there’s a real excitement with many fans to see the old skate jerseys again. Funny, because I don’t remember those jerseys being universally celebrated when they used them back in the day.
I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder. Or maybe we just love cool retro stuff nowadays.
Whatever the case, I think the Canucks could learn from the buzz surrounding these jerseys and do something special every year.
The Canucks have no shortage of retro jerseys to choose from, so they could show off a different jersey every year. They could wear the Flying V’s next season and the Naslund/Bertuzzi era jerseys the year after that. They could even wear them multiple times, in place of their current third jerseys.
Just something to think about, anyway.
