The Vancouver Canucks are learning the hard way how difficult it can be to create consistent offence at the NHL level.
The team’s scoring ability has fallen off a cliff and they rank near the bottom of the league in every important offensive category since the calendar flipped to 2025. During that time, they rank last in goals-per-game (2.19), second-last in shots-per-game (25.1), and have scored just 15 third-period goals, four behind the second-to-last team.
The advanced stats don’t paint a prettier picture. At five-on-five, the Canucks are 28th in high-danger chances-for per-60-minutes, 31st in shots-per-60-minutes, and last in goals-for per-60-minutes.
It’s hard to find any sort of offensive metric that puts the Canucks outside of the bottom five since Jan. 1. They haven’t scored more than three goals in a game since Jan. 27.
The lack of scoring can be seen in the team’s individual statistics as well. Besides Quinn Hughes, no one has more than 13 points since Jan. 1, despite the Canucks playing 27 games. Some of the biggest names, such as Elias Pettersson, Jake DeBrusk, and Brock Boeser, have all been very quiet. Their struggles have meant when the Canucks need a goal, head coach Rick Tocchet keeps rolling his lines as he can’t depend on the big names to come through.
Tyler Myers has more points than any Canucks forward other than Boeser since the start of 2025. While that’s great for Myers, it’s not a good sign for the Canucks.
The team doesn’t have a forward on the roster averaging more than half a point per game since Jan. 1. It’s a dire situation for a team in a playoff race.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this group struggle to generate shots or scoring chances. During last year’s postseason, the Canucks set NHL records for fewest shots taken. They made it to Game 7 of the second round despite their offence, not because of it.
It’s clear the Canucks are lacking the dangerous offensive personnel to build a high octane offence, but no reinforcements are coming this season. Tocchet will need to find a way to get the most from this current group, whether by changing lines or opening up the system.
