Canucks name six alternate captains for this season
The Vancouver Canucks are handing out A’s like they’re The Fonz.
While the Canucks won’t be naming a captain this season, they will have a plethora of alternate captains. On Tuesday, they announced that six players will wear an “A” on their jerseys this season: three at home and three on the road.
That includes a couple of unexpected players.

Three alternate captains on the road will be Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, and Zeev Buium.
At home, the alternate captains will be Filip Hronek, Linus Karlsson, and Drew O’Connor.
It’s not surprising to see Boeser, Pettersson, and Hronek as alternate captains. All three wore an “A” last season. Boeser has had his for two seasons, and Pettersson is the longest-serving alternate at four seasons.
O’Connor is a slightly less expected choice, but the veteran winger has earned respect in the room for his character and work ethic.
Karlsson and Buium represent the youth, though Karlsson is starting to age out of that designation at 26. The Swedish winger was a key leader during the Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup run, so it makes sense to recognize him as part of the leadership in Vancouver.
As for Buium, he’s a big part of the Canucks’ future, having signed an eight-year contract extension earlier this month. Buium’s energy and enthusiasm have quickly made him a major part of the Canucks’ core; the “A” simply recognizes the leadership he’s already shown.
