Canucks have hired a new coach for Manny Malhotra's staff

When the Vancouver Canucks fired Adam Foote last month, all three of his assistant coaches were let go too.

It appears the team has replaced at least one of them, with NHL insider Frank Seravalli reporting that Ryan Mougenel is being added to Manny Malhotra’s coaching staff.

Mougenel comes to the Canucks after five years as the head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins. The 50-year-old from Scarborough, Ont. also has eight years of experience as an AHL assistant coach with the San Jose Barracuda, Worcester Sharks, and Hershey Bears, in addition to Providence.

Mougenel’s teams in Providence made the playoffs in each of his five seasons there. He led the Bruins to the best record (54-16-2) in the AHL last season, which earned him coach-of-the-year honours. Providence faltered in the playoffs though, as the Bruins were upset by the Springfield Thunderbirds in the first round. It was the fourth year in a row Providence failed to make it out of Round 1.

This is the first NHL job for Mougenel, who made it as high as the AHL level during his playing days as a right winger.

When speaking to the local media Thursday at Rogers Arena, GM Ryan Johnson indicated that the coaching staff should be announced by next week.

“I think we’re in a good spot there,” he said.

Johnson also added that new assistant general manager Richard Seeley is “well into the process” of hiring a head coach for the currently vacant Abbotsford Canucks job.

The Canucks, along with the other 31 NHL franchises, are busy this week, with the NHL Draft kicking off on Friday. Johnson is armed with 10 picks in this year’s draft, including two in the first round.
