Canucks provide injury update on Chytil and there's some good news

The good news is that Filip Chytil doesn’t appear to have a concussion.

The bad news is that the Vancouver Canucks centre will still be out for a while with a shoulder injury.

According to Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson, Chytil will be out week-to-week.

“As nasty as that looked, he came down on his shoulder,” said Johnson. “More of a muscular strain of the shoulder…He was in great spirits this morning. Unfortunate bounce for someone who’s been through so much.”

The Canucks announced that Chytil has been placed on the Injured Reserve (IR) list, which means he will be out for at least seven days.

Chytil would not be eligible to return until Oct. 2, which means he will miss at least the first two games of the regular season, including the home opener on Oct. 1. Given Johnson’s “week-to-week” description, it’s likely that Chytil will be out for longer than that.

That potentially opens up a spot at third-line centre for the likes of Aatu Räty or Max Sasson.

Chytil was injured during the first period of Thursday’s preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers when he collided with referee Riley Brace. The official fell heavily to the ice, while Chytil stumbled headlong into the boards.

While Chytil initially stayed at the Canucks’ bench, he soon went down the tunnel and did not return.

It’s the latest in a long string of injuries for Chytil, though he can take some small comfort in it not being a head injury this time. The 27-year-old forward has suffered several concussions during his NHL career.
