Canucks fans are laughing at 'Quit Hughes' after playoff blunder

Vancouver Canucks fans have plenty of incentive to cheer against Quinn Hughes in the playoffs.

Not only did some Canucks fans get their wish on Monday night during a 4-2 Dallas Stars win, but there was an extra reason for the “Quit Hughes” crowd to smile.

Late in the third period, the Minnesota Wild had their goalie Jesper Wallstedt on the bench as they trailed the Stars 3-2.

With a minute remaining, Stars forward Wyatt Johnston curralled the puck and launched a backhander out of his own zone.

As it rolled towards the Wild’s end, Quinn Hughes chased after it.

But then, he let up.

After thinking that the puck was going to roll wide of the net for an icing, instead, the biscuit curled into the Wild’s net.

A desperate Hughes realized this at the last minute and went crashing into the boards after his failed attempt to keep the puck out of his goal.

As Hughes was seen yelling from the bench in the aftermath, some Canucks fans had completely different emotions.

“He loves quitting,” one fan said.

“Couldn’t happen to a better guy. #QuitHughes,” another wrote.

“Oh, look, the last few games of Canucks Quinn Hughes showed up,” a Canucks fan said.

Other fans took their opportunity to highlight other defencemen who may have handled the play differently.

“Cale Makar would never,” one fan wrote.

Not all hockey fans were harping on Hughes, with a lot of them giving him the benefit of the doubt on the play.

“The puck was on track to miss the net, and he was trying to get the icing call,” one Wild fan noted.

Others weren’t fully exonerating him from blame.

“Man, he should not have let up. But I don’t know if he was getting that regardless,” another wrote.

Regardless, it was a moment that one Canucks fan was so enamoured with that they were motivated to make an edited video montage of the incident.

Despite the loss, Hughes was actually more productive in Game 2, registering assists on both of Brock Faber’s goals. He had just one assist during a 6-1 Wild win in Game One.

The series flips back to Minnesota for Game 3 on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. PT.
