Canucks prospect Brock Boeser wins NCHC Rookie of the Year

Canucks 2015 first round pick Brock Boeser has been awarded the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Rookie of the Year.

This award was previously won by Langley, B.C. native and Boston Bruins prospect Danton Heinen last season, and current Carolina Hurricanes defenceman Jaccob Slavin in 2013-14.

In his freshman season with University of North Dakota, Boeser led the NCHC in goals (25) and points (48) on one of the best lines in college hockey with Chicago Blackhawks first round pick Nick Schmaltz and senior Drake Caggiula. His next goal will tie him with Zach Parise for most goals by a UND freshman in the last 30 years.

The Burnsville, Minnesota native had also won the Rookie of the Week on four separate occasions this past season, and won the Offensive Player of the Week once.

This award just puts an official title behind a fantastic season for Boeser at North Dakota. He is currently on a seven game point streak and has points in 23 of his last 26 games. Boeser only trails Winnipeg Jets prospect Kyle Connor in freshman goals and points in the entire NCAA.

Boeser was also awarded the inaugural NCHC Three Stars Award tonight.

Boeser and North Dakota faces the University of Minnesota Duluth tomorrow in the NCHC semi-finals. The winner will go onto the NCHC finals on Saturday. Regardless of the outcome, UND will participate in the NCAA regionals next weekend with hopes of punching their ticket to the Final Four in Tampa Bay from April 7-9.
