Sounds like Vancouver Canucks winger Boeser may have a concussion

Brock Boeser was the victim of an illegal check to the head during yet another Vancouver Canucks loss on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Bryan Rust hit Boeser in the head with his shoulder during the dying seconds of the game played at Rogers Arena. It should result in a suspension for Rust, who has a hearing scheduled Tuesday morning to discuss it, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced on Monday.

The Canucks didn’t hold a practice on Monday, so we didn’t get an official update on the 28-year-old’s status, other than the fact that he has been placed on injured reserve.

“The suspicion is a concussion,” TSN’s Darren Dreger said in an interview with Sekeres and Price.

Also on IR is Zeev Buium, the 20-year-old defenceman the Canucks received in the Quinn Hughes trade.

Buium took a puck to the face, but returned later in the game wearing a full visor.

With Boeser and Buium out, the Canucks have called up Jonathan Lekkerimäki and Victor Mancini from Abbotsford.

Lekkerimäki has four points in his last four games, which includes three goals and 14 shots on net. His last NHL game came on Dec. 6.

Mancini, meanwhile, has appeared in 24 AHL games, scoring eight points (2-6-8) with Abbotsford. He has appeared in nine NHL games, with his last game in Vancouver taking place Jan. 17.

There are just five games remaining on Vancouver’s schedule before the Olympic break, with the next three taking place at Rogers Arena. The Canucks currently rank last in the NHL standings, giving them good odds for the upcoming draft lottery this spring.
