The Canuck Place Children’s Hospice lit up with more than 60,000 lights on December 5 to bring comfort and care to kids with life-threatening illnesses.

The Lighting of the House, as this event is called, has been a tradition at Canuck Place since it opened in 1995. It’s a celebration of the people who help contribute to the funding of the care the hospice gives to children and families across BC.

Canuck Place specializes in pediatric palliative care, also known as comfort care or end-of-life care for children.

“We almost forgot about our family life. Everything was about taking care of Soskay and how to manage it,” says Akiho, the mother of Soskay, a patient at Canuck Place.

“We started going to Canuck Place and discovered a new life for our family, we finally felt whole.”

Soskay was one of two kids who received a special honour during the Lighting of the House – he flipped the switch to illuminate the house and grounds with fellow patient, Anthony.

The Lighting of the House was a celebration of the donations people have put towards the care Canuck Place gives to BC kids, but it isn’t the only way to get involved. Canuck Place has also launched their online Light a Life campaign to complement the Lighting of the House event.

Light a Life will run until December 31. For more information, follow Canuck Place on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
