The holidays are all about twinkling lights and spreading joy.

That’s why Canuck Place Children’s Hospice lit up for the season on December 7, with more than 60,000 colourful lights, to bring comfort to children with life-threatening diseases.

Donors, partners, friends, and family members, came together to celebrate the community of supporters who contribute to the pediatric palliative care funding of more than 715 children and families across BC.

“The Lighting of the House is a special tradition at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and has been since we first opened our doors in 1995. These lights represent the light and love found at Canuck Place,” Margaret McNeil, Canuck Place CEO, said in a press release.

The special evening featured a performance by the EnChor Choir, festive activities, a visit from Santa, and a ceremony where one Canuck Place family, the Cunninghams (with the help of Canuck Place therapy dog Poppy) flipped the switch to illuminate the house and grounds.

Dwayne Cunningham’s daughter Lumina is on the Canuck Place program, and this event reminds him of how Canuck Place has made an impact on their lives.

“Our first visit to Canuck place was lovely. It was immediately apparent that children and family were at home here, not just welcome, but at home here, that was special to me. My expectations were more medical, cold, clinical, and the actual CPCH is so warm and welcoming.

“Canuck place provides expert loving care for Lumina and our entire family. When we visit there we rest, are cared for, and can relax. When we are at home and have questions regarding Lumina’s health, we can get answers 24 hours a day. Canuck Place provides a lot of peace of mind and comfort, both in the hospice and in our home.

“There are no words to adequately describe the significance of Canuck Place to our family – they provide trusted counsel, expert care, respite and joy. Every dollar that donors give not only provides service for children like our Lumina, but also loving care for the entire family. We, as recipients of that support, are indescribably grateful.”

The Canuck Place House event will run until December 31 and you can show your support by contributing to the online Light A Life campaign.
