Canadians can save money on gas this week — here's how

If there’s one thing Canadians can agree on, it’s that gas prices are high these days.

But drivers got a bit of a break when the federal government announced in September an extension of its fuel excise tax relief until Jan. 31, 2027.

This saves drivers 10 cents per litre on gas and four cents per litre on diesel. Some may argue it isn’t enough, but every penny counts in times like these.

Canadians are already paying a hefty amount to fuel up.

According to GasBuddy’s fuel price portal, the average price of a litre of gas varies by province. In Alberta, it’s the cheapest at 157.3 cents per litre. However, drivers in PEI and Newfoundland are really feeling the pinch, paying upwards of 219 cents per litre to fill up their tanks.

There are now more savings in store, but only for a limited time.

Drivers can head to participating Circle K and Couche-Tard gas stations on Thursday, Oct. 15 to save 10 cents per litre.

The company, which operates more than 2,000 locations across the country, says the offer is part of National Fuel Day and is valid for just four hours, between 3 and 7 p.m. local time.

“Our goal is to make life on the road just a little easier, because we know that every trip adds up,” says Stéphane Trudel, senior vice-president of operations at Alimentation Couche-Tard.

According to the press release, Canadians can save even more through the Circle K app earlier in the day.

Drivers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and British Columbia can get a 10-cent-per-litre discount from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time on Oct. 15.

If you can hold off on filling up during your lunch break or on your way home from work, timing your trip to the pump could save you a few extra bucks this week.
