Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies was pulled over by police due to a suspected case of drunk driving earlier today, according to a German report.

In an article co-authored by Karl Keim, Dennis Brosda and David Verhoff for Bild, Davies was reportedly stopped by German police while driving in his Lamborghini sports car in the early hours of Friday morning in Munich.

Davies was brought to a police station, where he was reportedly tested to a BAC of 0.6, with 0.5 being the legal limit. A fine and suspension of his licence are possible for the infraction, given it is his first offence, per Bild’s article.

Davies, Canada’s current captain, has been with Bayern Munich since 2019 since a transfer from the MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps, winning the 2020 UEFA Champions League and five Bundesliga titles. A 24-year-old born in a Ghanaian refugee camp to Liberian parents but grew up in Edmonton, Davies is arguably Canada’s biggest current male soccer star.

Alongside fellow Canadian defender Alistair Johnston, he was named Friday to a shortlist for the FIFA Best XI, an annual selection of the game’s top players from the sport’s global governing body. A key piece of Canada’s 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, Davies is tied for 10th in all-time scoring among the country’s men’s international players, with 15 career goals for the national team.

The news of Davies’ run-in with the law comes ahead of one of the biggest games in world club soccer, with Bayern Munich playing longtime rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in “Der Klassiker.” Bayern currently sit first in the Bundesliga standings with nine wins and two draws through 11 games, while Dortmund are 12 points behind, in fifth place with 19 points via six wins, a draw, and four losses.

Davies or Bayern Munich have yet to comment on the story publicly.
