6 years later, B.C. shot putter Dylan Armstrong to receive 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medal
After a lengthy wait, B.C. resident Dylan Armstrong is now officially an Olympic medallist.
The Kamloops resident originally finished in fourth place in the 2008 Beijing Olympics shot put competition, less than a centimetre back from third place Andrei Mikhnevich. However, last year, Mikhnevich received a lifetime ban for a doping violation in 2006 – his second offence – meaning he would forfeit his medals and his results between 2006 and 2013 would be wiped out.
On Wednesday, the Canadian Olympic Committee confirmed that Armstrong has officially been awarded a third-place result from the 2008 Beijing Games.
“As a result of a lifetime ban of shot putter Andrei Mikhnevich by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the International Olympic Committee has awarded Armstrong the Olympic bronze,” the Canadian Olympic Committee said in a statement.
According to a Canadian Olympic Committee spokesperson, Armstrong will be given the medal at a later date.
