Want to be a senator? Now's your chance to apply

Wannabe politicos, listen up: the federal government is taking applications for senators in several provinces.

Provinces that are are taking applications for the position include BC, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, PEI, and Quebec.

The roles of Canadian senators vary, but involve participating in the senate chamber, holding business meetings, and debating on bills.

So, what does the federal government require of its senators? Well, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen
  • Be at least 30 years old and no older than 75
  • Have a net worth of at least $4,000
  • Have been a resident of the province for which you’re applying for at least two years

You must also demonstrate that you’re non-partisan, and priority will be given to people who represent indigenous people, as well as linguistic, minority, and ethnic communities to ensure the senate has fair representation.

Personal statements that are no more than 1,000 words in length are required as well to demonstrate how you meet each qualification and highlight your skills and personal experience. A CV should be submitted along with the personal statement.
