There’s a cool event hitting up Coquitlam on June 3, and it’s for a great cause – Relay For Life.
Taking place at Percy Perry Stadium from 10 am to 10 pm, it’s more than just a walk.
It’s an opportunity to join a massive group of people to take part in activities while raising money toward Canadian Cancer Society’s research and support services.
And if you’re athletic, even better because there will be relay races – lots of them. As Canada’s aging population is expected to drive a 40% increase in cancer cases by 2030, running enthusiasts can help meet the rising demand for services and continued investments in research.
And you don’t have to be running to participate. You can pass the baton to your teammate, walk the track, or join in on trackside activities.
This year alone, the lives of more than 200,000 people in Canada, and their families lives will change when they’re diagnosed with the disease. But you can help by supporting the Canadian Cancer Society in Relay For Life.
“I’m a strong supporter of Relay For Life – I know firsthand what type of impact the money raised can have. The stem cell transplant I underwent as part of my treatment was the result of research funded by the Canadian Cancer Society,” says Carrie Walk-Boyd, Hodgkin lymphoma survivor and Relay For Life participant.
One supporter of the event is Linda Wong. Wong participated in her first Relay For Life event in memory of her sister, Doris. Since then, Linda has lost her sisters Rita and Shirley to cancer. Last year, Linda managed seven teams for the Richmond Relay For Life event and her teams raised a massive combined total of $32,600.
Relay For Life first started in Canada in 1999, and the first event helped raise $85,000. Since then, it has raised more than $500 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.
So, your impact makes a massive difference to cancer research and the vital support services for cancer suffers and their families. And although substantial progress in cancer research has hugely improved survival rates, a lot more needs to be done.
