Ontario native Brett Rheeder took the top spot at the Red Bull Joyride event in front of 30,000 fans in Whistler on Sunday.
Dubbed “Slopestyle Sunday” the event sees 15 of the world’s best riders go head-to-head as the curtain comes down on the Crankworx festival in Whistler.
Rheeder put in a near perfect run unleashing an arsenal of gravity defying tricks on his way to unseating the reigning champ Brandon Semenuk, who has taken top spot at the Whistler event for the past three years.
“It’s such a surreal feeling. I’ve been struggling since 2012 and after facing so much pressure last year and having two crashes, this has been a long time coming,” said Rheeder. “I was still very nervous going into today. The conditions weren’t ideal but as soon as I dropped in, everything just goes away and it’s just you and the bike.”
With a score of 93 following his first run, Rheeder just edged out Belgium’s Thomas Genon and the Swede Max Fredriksson.
