Canada's Daniel Nestor advances to doubles semifinal at Australian Open
The ageless wonder, Daniel Nestor, has done it again.
The 43-year-old Canadian and his doubles partner, Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, have advanced to the semifinal at the Australian Open. At 37-years-old, Stepanek is no spring chicken either. The pair, who entered the tournament unseeded, defeated the #14 duo of Treat Huey and Max Mirnyi in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) today.
Despite his age, Nestor is the 19th ranked doubles player in the world. He is playing in his 23rd Australian Open. Nestor won the doubles title at the Aussie Open with Mark Knowles of the Bahamas way back in 2002. His last doubles championship at a Grand Slam tournament was the 2012 French Open.
Nestor and Stepanek will face the 16th seeded team of Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers in the semifinal. Cuevas and Granollers upset the #9 seeded team of Jack Sock and Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil in the quarters, needing three sets to do it (5-7, 6-1, 6-2).
In singles action, Canada’s Milos Raonic will play in the quarterfinal against Gael Monfils on Wednesday morning (or Tuesday night if you prefer), beginning at 12:30am PST on TSN.
