Canadian women's basketball team wins FIBA Americas, qualifies for 2016 Olympics

Canada’s women’s national basketball team has booked their ticket to Rio next summer, qualifying for the Olympic tournament after an 82-66 win over Cuba in the final of the FIBA Americas tournament.

Canada bulldozed their way through the tournament, winning all six of their games in convincing fashion. The closest any team came to beating Canada was Cuba in the final, and they lost by 16 points.

Nineteen-year-old Kia Nurse was Canada’s best player in the tournament, and was named tournament MVP.

This is the first time that Canada has won the FIBA Americas tournament since 1995 and the second consecutive time the women’s national team has qualified to compete in the Summer Olympics. At London 2012, the team finished at 8th place.
