Canada and USA agree to close joint borders to tourists and visitors

Just days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada would be closing its borders to anyone who isn’t a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, excluding the US, and on Wednesday morning he confirmed that the US will be included.

President Donald Trump had also tweeted the countries will shutting down travel over the shared boundary.

Travellers will no longer be permitted to travel across the border for recreational or tourism purposes.

Trucking will not be affected by this measure, Trudeau said.

The Prime Minister said the border will be closed as long as it needs to be.

Earlier this week, the federal government said that starting on March 18, foreign nationals would not be allowed to board flights to Canada. There were exceptions, such as Canadian citizens’ immediate family, airline workers, travellers with a layover in Canada, and diplomats.

At the time, Trudeau said the measure didn’t apply to US citizens or to flights coming from Mexico and the Caribbean.

But this has since changed.

According to a tweet from the president, Canada and the US have “mutually consented” to temporarily close the border to non-essential traffic.

He added that “trade will not be affected.”
