Canada Soccer star Jonathan David is going to the big time.

According to reports from soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, and later confirmed by ESPN’s Matteo Moretto, David will be signing a deal with historic Italian club Juventus.

Terms of the deal have yet to be discussed.

While those in North America might have been more focused on the NHL and NBA free agency opening up, the start of July also signalled the opening of the soccer transfer window for European teams.

Moretto also added that David “is now expected to travel to Italy in the coming hours to undergo a medical and sign his contract.”

Juventus had been playing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, while David had been playing for Canada in the Gold Cup. Both teams crashed out of the tournament in their first knockout games, allowing David the opportunity to work out a deal with his new club.

For Canada, he’s become their top all-time goal scorer at just age 25, putting up 36 goals in 67 appearances, and is expected to start on their FIFA World Cup team next year. In eight matches for Canada in 2025, he’s slotted home five goals, including a pair in the Gold Cup before Canada’s quarterfinal exit to Guatemala.

David has been one of the hottest striker targets in the world for years, having made his name as a top forward over the past half-decade while in France.

In 178 league appearances for Lille since 2020, David has put up 87 goals. In the 2020-21 season, David’s first with the club, Lille picked up an iconic Ligue 1 title win, the franchise’s fourth in 80 years of existence.

While the French domestic league has been dominated by Paris Saint-Germain and their 11 league titles since 2013, David’s 13 league goals that season helped give Lille a one-point edge to secure the trophy.

France is currently rated as the fifth-best domestic league by UEFA, while Italy ranks No. 2 behind England’s Premier League. Juventus, meanwhile, are desperate for a return to success after nine straight league titles from 2012 to 2020.
