Following Friday evening’s deadly terror attacks in Paris, Canada Place is joining a wide range of global landmarks by lighting up the building in the colours of the French flag – blue, white and red.
According to Port Metro Vancouver spokesperson John Parker-Jervis, the ‘Sails of Light’ lighting system for the iconic five sails at the Canada Place pier will be lit up tonight and Sunday beginning at 4:30 p.m. each day.
Jervis told Vancity Buzz the lights could not be immediately changed as the colours are preprogrammed by a third party.
“Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible on short notice last night due to the technical set-up of the lights,” he said. “They require pre-set programming for the colour combinations, and we had never done the blue, white and red combination before so unfortunately it wasn’t in the system.”

Earlier today, B.C. Place confirmed that its exterior perimeter lighting system will glow the colours of France tonight and Sunday after beginning at approximately 4:35 p.m. until 11 p.m.
Vancouver City Hall’s exterior lighting glowed France’s national colours shortly after the attack.
