Canada has raced to Olympic gold and bronze medals after a thrilling day in short-track speed skating.

It was Steven Dubois who captured a gold medal in the men’s 500-metre final, leading from start-to-finish with a time of 40.835. He edged out a pair of Dutch brothers, Melle and Jens van ‘t Wout, who finished with silver and bronze medals, respectively.

William Dandjinou’s first individual Olympic medal remains elusive, as he was penalized for a collision during the race and did not place in the final.

This is Dubois’ first-ever Olympic gold medal in an individual event and his second medal of the 2026 Games after snagging a silver in the mixed 2,000-metre relay. It’s his second Olympic gold medal overall, after finishing atop the podium in the 5,000-metre relay in Beijing 2022.

Canada now has five short-track speed skating medals in Italy (one gold, two silver, two bronze).

The Canadian women’s 3,000-metre relay team of Courtney Sarault, Kim Boutin, Florence Brunelle, and Danae Blais skated hard in the final on Wednesday, reaching a time of 4:04.3 to take home the bronze medal.

A shocking fall from the Netherlands team midway through the race opened things up for the Canadians, but they could not hold onto first place. A stumble in the final laps dropped Canada down to third, where they finished.

It was South Korea who won the gold, while the host Italians skated to a silver.

While this is a Canadian record fourth medal at the 2026 Games for Sarault, it was the second podium finish for Boutin and Brunnelle, and the first for Blais.

Canada’s overall medal count has risen to 14 after these two podium finishes (four gold, four silver, six bronze).
