Canadians had a busy year on Twitter in 2015.

The most popular tweets of the year focused largely around #elxn42, unsurprisingly, and October 19 saw the highest volume of tweets between the federal election and the Blue Jays win during game three of the ALCS.

Around 5.5 million tweets were sent by Canadians that day, according to Twitter.

As far as notable Canadians go, Justin Bieber swept Twitter with seven of the top 10 most retweeted Canadian tweets for 2015. Drake has two tweets in the top 10 and Toronto City Councillor Norm Kelly rounded out the list after he came to Drake’s defence during an online battle with Meek Mill.

Here are the most retweeted Canadian tweets of 2015:

The top ten Canadian-bred hashtags were largely focused on politics and sports, two main themes that dominated Canada this year.

  1. #cdnpoli
  2. #BellLetsTalk
  3. #elxn42
  4. #BlueJays
  5. #ComeTogether
  7. #GoHabsGo
  8. #habs
  9. #TMLTalk
  10. #TO2015

And many Canadian Twitter accounts broke the 1,000,000 follower mark, including Justin Trudeau and the Toronto Blue Jays:
