FIFA ranks Canada higher than ever before in men's soccer

While the most recent results of the Canada men’s national soccer team might not have been exactly what they were hoping for, the group still did get a bit of good news this week.
Despite a shocking quarterfinal exit in the 2025 Gold Cup to Guatemala, the men’s national team hit a new all-time FIFA ranking, coming in at No. 28 on the latest iteration of the classification.
Canada is nestled between Turkey at No. 27 and Sweden at No. 29. The Canadians remain the third-highest ranked Concacaf nation, sitting behind the United States at No. 15 and Mexico at No. 13.

Canada’s rise in the men’s soccer global rankings has been one of the world’s best over the last half-decade, as they were ranked at No. 73 in June 2020. But with a FIFA World Cup appearance in 2022 and a second consecutive one as hosts in 2026, the program is smack dab in the middle of the most successful run in their history.
āThe group has responded every time [Iāve challenged them]. Even though itās not been perfect, I think we continue to understand what we, what every moment needs, and then we are ready to deliver,ā men’s national team coach Jesse Marsch told Offside last month, prior to the Gold Cup.
ā[Weāre considering] what are the immediate next steps, what are the progressions for whatās going to be necessary in a month? Who are the players that are most necessary to include in the project, and how do we give them the right kinds of challenges?ā
While Canada doesn’t have any major competitions on the horizon prior to the FIFA World Cup, they still have some decent challenges ahead. This fall, they’ll be taking on Romania, Wales, Australia, and Colombia in friendly matches, all four countries that fall within the top 50 in the current FIFA rankings.
