Your photos could be part of this year's virtual Canada Day celebrations (CONTEST)

Jun 30 2020, 2:30 pm

The most patriotic day of the year is fast approaching. Although things are a little different right now, you can still enjoy the fun and entertainment of Western Canada’s biggest Canada Day celebration.

In May, the City of Surrey announced that it will be hosting a Virtual Surrey Canada Day event for the benefit of public health amid the pandemic. Taking place on Wednesday, July 1 the free family-friendly event literally has something for everyone.

This year, you can be a part of the magic while maintaining social distancing by submitting your photos to be featured on the Surrey Canada Day Livestream. You could even win a brag-worthy prize at the same time.

The virtual party, hosted by four-time Olympic gold medalist, Hayley Wickenheiser, will be streamed on Facebook Live and YouTube Live. It all kicks off with a family hour for kids and seniors from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Programming featuring Indigenous acts and musical performances will be streamed in the evening, from 6 to 9 pm.

Canadians have faced unforeseen challenges over the past few months and the upcoming event presents an opportunity to reconnect with the community (albeit virtually). Embark on virtual tours, explore cultural shows, take dance lessons, and see a rodeo tribute — all from the comfort of your home.

Over 25 artists are slated to perform at the virtual event, including Said the Whale, 54-40, Bif Naked, Ashley Pater, Daniel Wesley, Desi Sub Culture, Jill Barber, The Beaches, Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother), Sleepy Gonzales, The Wild Moccasin Dancers, Hotel Mira, and Teon Gibbs, among many others.

The event will wrap up with an illuminating (virtual) fireworks display finale.

Virtual Surrey Canada Day is set to pay tribute to those affected by COVID-19 and the local healthcare professionals and essential service providers working tirelessly on the frontline. Organizers of the event are also working with corporate partners to raise $10,000 for the Surrey Food Bank so the city’s most vulnerable population can continue to be supported.

In the run-up to Canada Day, there are two contests you can enter. The first is being hosted by the City of Surrey, with one of three $200 gift cards towards participating Surrey Store to Door businesses up for grabs.

To enter to win a gift card and have the chance to be featured on the Surrey Canada Day Livestream, submit photos or video content that showcase at least one of the following:

  • Why You Love Canada: Share stories or photos highlighting your love for Canada.
  • Sing O Canada: Grab your family, friends, or solo it and sing “O Canada”
  • Wish a Happy Canada Day: Wish a Happy Canada Day in your video

If you’re interested in submitting content in any of these categories, simply email [email protected] or post your entry on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #SurreyCanadaDay. Remember to follow @surreybcevents on Instagram and @SurreyCanadaDay on Facebook, too.

The second contest could set your family up for a delicious dinner on Canada Day, and you can enter by following the details below. In the meantime, to discover more about the first Virtual Surrey Canada Day event, visit the website.
