The Campbell Valley Wine Route: World-class wine in Metro Vancouver’s backyard (CONTEST)

Dec 19 2017, 10:52 pm

A bottle of wine goes a long way. Whether it’s a gift, a house-warming or just a way to wind down for the weekend with a few friends, indulging in refreshing white or a bold red is part of many of our Vancouver lifestyles.

Just the other day, we learned that we have a world-class vineyard tour in the Fraser Valley that is only 45 minutes from Downtown Vancouver. The Campbell Valley Wine Route boasts four local wineries all within a close distance – perfect for a summer date, spending an afternoon sipping and learning about the intricacies of their wineries.

Here’s our interviews with the wineries of the Campbell Valley Wine Route.

Township 7 Vineyard & Winery

Address: 21152 – 16th Avenue, Langley

Why did you decide to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route?
The Fraser Valley is a hidden gem in British Columbia responsible for making some very fine wines. Through our friendly partnership with the other three wineries, we’ve put together a way to experience the great wine region without having to go too far out of the city.

What can you tell us about your flagship wine?
Our 2012 Reserve 7 is our top tier blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petite Verdot. We feel it shows off what B.C. does very well. We reserve our top tier grapes and use our newest oak barrels to make this smooth, bold and fantastic red wine. The 2012 Reserve 7 is perfect for a special dinner shared with friends or a significant other.

What is this season’s trend in wines?
The trend this spring and summer will be Rosé wines. We make a fantastic dry styled Rosé with notes of strawberry and rhubarb – just right for a sunny day on the patio. We will release our 2014 Vintage on Mother’s Day.

Chaberton Estate Winery

Address: 1064 – 216th Street, Langley

Why did you decide to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route?
As the oldest and largest Estate Winery in the Campbell Valley (and Fraser Valley), it was important for us to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route. We are extremely proud to be a part of this partnership and enjoy working as a group in promoting the 100 per cent local and award-winning wines. We love that people can make a pleasant day trip to the up-and-coming wine region of British Columbia!

What can you tell us about your flagship wine?
Our 2013 Reserve Bacchus is made from grapes grown solely in our Estate Winery vineyard. Some of the vines are over 30 years old, from the original 1980s vitis vinifera planting. At the time, it was thought you couldn’t grow grapes in the Fraser Valley! The Reserve Bacchus is an off dry white wine which has aromas of citrus, chamomile, and apricots. Flavours of peach, orange blossom and soft lemon notes are joined by a long, smooth finish.

What is this season’s trend in wines?
As the days get warmer, people are looking for crisp, clean, and refreshing wines – leaving the ‘heavy reds’ more for the fall and winter seasons. Also, high on the list are Blush, Pink, and “Bubbly” wines, all great for afternoon patio relaxing! For the camping, picnic and cottage crowd, blended wines in red and and white varietals are high on the list for their ease of drinking and ease of pairing with appetizers, summer BBQ’s and picnic foods.

Backyard Vineyards

Address: 3033 – 232 Street, Langley

Why did you decide to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route?
It was a simple decision for Backyard Vineyards to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route! As a recognized BC Wine Appellation, the Fraser Valley has a lot to boast about, and we’re proud to be associated with such a quality group of vineyards and wineries.

What can you tell us about your flagship wine?
Our Blanc de Noir Brut is a traditional method champagne-style Sparkling Wine – the only one of its kind made in the lower mainland. Adhering to French practice, we use 100 per cent Pinot Noir grapes grown from our Estate vineyard. This is an ideal wine for all occasions.

What is this season’s trend in wines?
I would say that pinks are back! Our 2014 Rosé is crafted in traditional fashion (the saignée method) and is 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Merlot, and 100% BC VQA Fraser Valley. A perfect patio sipper, this wine pairs beautifully with cedar-planked salmon, roast pork or a baguette with some brie!

Vista D’oro Farms & Winery

Address: 346 – 208th Street, Langley

Why did you decide to join the Campbell Valley Wine Route?
Vista D’oro was part of the founding wineries to form the Campbell Valley Wine Route association. We felt our four wineries within close proximity to Vancouver offered winery guests great value. Everyone can experience local wines made from local vineyards, without driving five hours to the Okanagan Valley.

What can you tell us about your flagship wine?
What’s cool and unique about our Murphy’s Law White Wine is that it is grown and produced here in the Campbell Valley. This is a true representation of what can be accomplished in our unique growing conditions.

What is this season’s trend in wines?
Orange is the new trend in wines. The Midwest has been enjoying these great wines for years from their Eastern European producers but now it’s time for the West to jump on board. These wines are not like your traditional fruit-forward, slightly sweet Rosé. They are more earthy, well-rounded wines with extra rustic flavor notes that are great for hot summer days by the glass. They also pair well with any tomato pasta!
