Nature-inspired mural brings life to Bute-Robson plaza in Downtown Vancouver

Just in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a new on-street mural is providing the Bute-Robson plaza in Downtown Vancouver’s West End area with some new added vibrancy.
The mural has been painted onto the pavement surface of the in-street patio area on Bute Street just north of Robson Street to the laneway.

Created by Kris Young and Drip & Roll, and commissioned by the Robson Street Business Association (RBSA), this mural uses flowing shapes and bold, nature-inspired colors.
The design features winding bands of blue, teal, green, yellow, and orange that resemble rivers, mountains, and forests seen from above. Curved lines create a sense of movement and lead the eye through the entire space, while simple tree and landscape shapes reinforce the connection to nature.

This segment of Bute Street just north of Robson Street is the City of Vancouver’s temporary configuration for this portion of the overall Bute-Robson plaza, which will eventually have a permanent design on Bute Street spanning between north of Robson Street to the laneway and south of Robson Street to Haro Street.
Over the much longer term, this will form a segment of the north-south Bute Street greenway between the Coal Harbour seawall and Sunset Beach Park.
In December 2025, after roughly 18 months of construction, the initial Bute-Robson plaza project reached full completion at a cost of $10 million, specifically the in-street plaza just south of Robson Street to the laneway. In Spring 2025, a widening of the Robson Street pedestrian sidewalks to the west and east of the intersection of Bute Street and a new pedestrian and cycling crossing reached completion.
To further activate the plaza’s mural space in Summer 2026, on select Tuesday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., RBSA will be hosting music performances in this space for the public — Laura Crema on June 16, LJ Mountenay on June 30, Kristin Fung on July 14, Kate Hahn with Alvin Brendan on July 18, Antonio Larosa Trio on Aug. 11, and Taras Luka on Aug. 25.

This past weekend, a significant public art installation also reached completion in Yaletown — a FIFA World Cup-themed inspired transformation of the in-street Helmcken Plaza on Helmcken Street between Mainland and Hamilton streets.
Created by Seth Book of 800K, the “Beautiful Game” features the official colours of Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup branding, with a main mural on the plaza’s surface and six additional surrounding wall murals celebrating over 50 global soccer stars, including Pelé, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, David Beckham, and Thomas Müller.
