Former yoga students band together to preserve practice in Burnaby Heights

The New Year is less than a month in and you’re already feeling burnt out. Work has been stressful, the car repairs can’t be put off any longer. And then there’s the pandemic!

You need a way to centre yourself. The new Heights Yoga and Wellness Centre in Burnaby is here to help you with just that.

Partners Yuen Wong, Amy Phun, Nash Cisneros and Howie Leung opened Heights Yoga at the former location of Modo Yoga Burnaby – 4701 Hastings Street at Beta Avenue.

When Modo Yoga closed in October 2020, the former-students-turned-business-owners knew there was a void they would have to fill.

“This was a place where many improved their physical and mental health, met new friends, and experienced stillness and mindfulness,” said the team in a press release.

“As a result, the community searched for solutions to keep the studio open, and fortunately, with the help of selfless and giving community members, the studio has seen its rebirth.”

Heights Yoga held their soft opening in December and have followed Provincial Health Officer’s guidelines by offering permitted low-intensity group exercise classes at different times throughout the week.

Safety protocols in place while attending Hatha Yoga or Yogalates classes include mask wearing, mandated social distance and limited capacity.

“I feel extremely safe with the COVID-19 safety procedures in place at Heights Yoga,” said new Heights Yoga student Kristy Roulette.

“There is a limited number of yogis practicing in a spacious room with mats at least 2.5 meters distance apart. The instructors are fantastic, plus, the new owners seem really nice. I had been struggling to find a form of exercise that I’m comfortable with during COVID-19 as I have little motivation for doing a home routine. I highly recommend Heights Yoga.”

Wong, Phun, Cisneros and Leung all have various experiences in starting and running successful businesses. They also understand that opening a new yoga studio and wellness centre during a pandemic will be a challenge, but one that is worth it.

“We know first hand the value of yoga for one’s health and well-being and what it can do for the community,” said Wong. “We welcome everyone to join this warm and inviting, inclusive community studio and wellness centre.”

Heights Yoga will be celebrating its Grand Opening on January 30, 2021.
