Burnaby Tesla driver inadvertently reveals location after reported hit and run

A Burnaby Tesla driver who was involved in an alleged hit and run unwittingly revealed his location to law enforcement.

On Feb. 10, around 11:30 p.m., Burnaby RCMP officers responded to a report of a hit and run in the McKee Street and McGregor Avenue area. The caller said they saw a vehicle fleeing a scene without stopping after hitting two parked vehicles.

According to the Burnaby RCMP, the Tesla driver in question left a “trail of fluid behind” after the alleged incident, which led the police to his location.

Burnaby RCMP said the suspect vehicle left a piece of its fender “with the marking ‘Model X’ behind.”

“Officers also noted a trail of fluid leading away from the scene,” the Burnaby RCMP adds.

Burnaby RCMP investigators followed the trail, leading them to a residential property.

“The owner of the suspect vehicle’s safety was confirmed, then he was arrested for failing to remain at the scene of a collision,” Burnaby RCMP said.

The vehicle was seized, as was a video from the vehicle’s camera system. The Burnaby RCMP was a wee bit cheeky in its final quote about the incident.

“This was a fluid investigation, and our officers simply followed the evidence,” said Corporal Mike Kalanj.

“While ‘X’ didn’t necessarily mark the spot, ‘Model X’ definitely assisted our officers in identifying the suspect vehicle,” he added.

Burnaby RCMP states that the investigation is ongoing.
