18-year-old shot in Burnaby while travelling in vehicle

Police in Burnaby are investigating after a shooting on Sunday night sent one man to hospital with injuries.

According to Burnaby RCMP, the incident took place around 10:15 pm, when officers responded to the area of Willingdon Avenue and Burke Street for a reports of a shooting.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers found an 18-year-old man who had been shot in the leg, and a vehicle that had been shot at, as well.

Police said at this point in the investigation, they believe the victim was in a Grey 2011 Suzuki Swift with two other men, heading south on Willingdon, when a white sedan pulled up beside the vehicle and started to shoot at them, before feeling the scene in an unknown direction.

The driver of the Suzuki “crashed the vehicle and the three occupants fled from the scene with the victim being quickly located,” police said. “The other two men were also located and did not suffer any injuries.”

All three men are known to police, and investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

“To have something like this happen in our city, particularly a residential area is completely unacceptable,” said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj. “We want to assure residents of our city that we are resourcing this investigation from units right across our detachment to thoroughly investigate this serious incident.”
