Burnaby man shot and killed inside vehicle in Coquitlam

A Burnaby man is dead after he was shot while inside his vehicle in a Coquitlam neighbourhood this past weekend.

Just after 10 pm on Friday, Coquitlam RCMP responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Sylvan Place and Riverview Crescent. Callers also reported that a vehicle was seen fleeing the area as well.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers found a man inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Not long after receiving the initial report of shots fired, police were notified of a burning dark coloured sedan a short distance away, in the area of Mariner Way near Dartmoor Drive.

Investigators said they have now determined that the burnt vehicle was a 2018 grey Chrysler 300 and would like to speak with anyone that has information about it.

On Monday, police said the homicide victim has now been identified as 45-year-old Burnaby resident Donald Kelly.

While police said there is no evidence linking Kelly’s death to other recent shootings in the Lower Mainland, they do not believe this was a random attack.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now taken over the case.

“There are people who have information about what happened,” said IHIT’s Frank Jang in a statement. “I urge these individuals to come forward and speak with IHIT so that we can hold those responsible to account.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551- IHIT (4448), or by email at [email protected]. Those with information to share who would like to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or leave a tip online at solvecrime.ca.
